If you are planning on painting the exterior of your home soon then you have a big decision ahead of you. You can have it repainted in its current color or you can have it painted in a completely new color. If you decide to go with a new color then you'll need to choose a color for the house and a separate color for the trim. Both of these need to be colors you know are going to be happy with for years to come and that will go well together. Here are some of the things you want to consider when you are choosing the colors for your home's exterior:

Do you have a home owner's association?

If you live in a neighborhood where there is a home owner's association in place then you should read the rules and regulations which are referred to as the CC&Rs. There will more than likely be rules that you have to abide by regarding the colors you can paint the exterior of your home. These rules are put in place to help keep the neighborhood looking more uniform and up to certain standards. Once you know the colors that are permitted you can begin choosing the colors you want to paint your home in.

Chose colors that go with your landscaping

You want to make sure you don't choose colors that end up clashing with your landscaping. One example of how this could happen is if your landscaping includes light green rocks and you decide to paint the house light blue. The colors don't really go together and the lightness of both can give your house and yard a very pale appearance that may not work well together. However, if you have bright green grass and you go with a cheerful yellow paint and a white trim then you may find that your house maintains a very cheerful appearance.

Consider the weather for the area you live in

If you live in an area with certain types of weather then you should take those weather conditions into consideration. For example, if you live in an area with a whole lot of rain and you have a dirt yard then it may be a good idea to stay away from very light colors like white or pale yellow. The rain can cause a lot of mud to be splashed on the lower part of your house and in an area with so much rain this can lead to discoloration of that part of the house fairly quickly. Also, if you live in an area where it gets very hot often then you may want to go with lighter colors since darker colors can trap the heat more and make it harder for you to keep the house nice and cool inside.
